Show Notes

Welcome to episode four of A Proper DBE Podcast brought to you by Daughters of the British Empire.

The Daughters of the British Empire is a 501(c)3 nonprofit American society of women of British or Commonwealth birth or ancestry. We share and promote our heritage while supporting local charities and our senior facilities across the United States.

We are a diverse group of women standing together in friendship and charity, joined by a common bond - the Commonwealth of Nations, learning and growing together.

In this episode, host Georgia Abrams is joined by the following guests:

  • Mark Hawks - Bard of Avon, Kansas
  • Ann Robards - Clarence House, Florida
  • Brenda Marks - Somerset House, Kansas

We discuss Sir Winston Churchill's famous "Iron Curtain" speech delivered at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, as well as the ways he is remembered - from the Married Love statue on Kansas City's Country Club plaza, made by Oscar Nemon, to the National Churchill Museum on Westminster's campus and the sculpture made by his granddaughter, Edwina Sandys. We also talk about Sir Christopher Wren's design of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, how it was destroyed during the Blitz and then moved to Fulton in commemoration of Churchill's speech. Finally, we talk about another church moved from England to Kansas with connections to Lady Margaret Thatcher.
